I’m emerging from the World Cup this week. After a long month of late night soccer game watching, and a great time last weekend celebrating the German victory with some German friends (how better to enjoy it, right?), life is back to normal around here. Today, I wanted to share an example of the high Swiss prices that I think will resonate with Americans (and which will make it clear why eating out is a special treat!): Subway sandwiches. In the […]
On the Zurich lakefront, swans, ducks, pigeons, and all of our dog’s other favorite winged creatures congregate. There is a statue there that I like to think of as an overly dramatic feeding of the ducks–which is no less ridiculous than what I think it actually is: a naked boy dancing with an eagle.
Earlier this week, I lost my wallet. I had it at the grocery store, and then 15 minutes later at the bus stop, it was gone. I retraced my steps but found nothing. What a drag! I’ve never lost my wallet before. After a few moments of horror, I resigned myself to the work that now faced me. I got home, called the credit card companies, and then started researching how to manage the other losses–most notably, my Swiss identification […]
I’ve heard that the Swiss pride themselves on the cleanliness and quality of the water available in their public drinking fountains–and I’ve seen many people using them, so there must be something to it. (Note: you drink the water coming out of the spout, of course, not the water sitting in the basin.) What I love most is that so many of them are really beautiful! You find them in public squares, parks, and on random street corners. And, as […]
We’ve now been in Switzerland for about five months. Five! In some ways it’s hard to believe it has been that long, but we really do feel pretty established, and that takes time. I’ve taken a bit of an unexpected break from blogging. There was no particular reason for it–I’ve always enjoyed updating the blog, but just needed a little break while we settled into our new home. So I thought I’d share some of the things we’re loving about […]
I’m back! Our visas came through, our flight was booked, and nearly two weeks ago we landed in Zurich. The first days have passed quickly, filled with errands, paperwork, and exploration. We’re living in an apartment in Kreis 4 (district 4). Our furniture hasn’t yet even left Brazil (!), so we’re living with rental furniture. But we’re happy to already be in our permanent home, and not temporary housing. Governor has adjusted nicely; he likes to sit on our balcony […]
365. That’s the number of days left before the World Cup comes to Brazil! With one year left to go, excitement is building here. The Confederations Cup starts this weekend, and will be an important test for Brazil. We’re planning to attend one of the Confederations Cup semi-finals here in Belo Horizonte, and I picked up our tickets the other day. The ticketing center was set up inside the parking garage of a mall. The location wasn’t glamorous, but the […]
